George Street Playhouse Internships
Internships are designed to give the intern experience and training in specific areas within theatre. Interns are supervised within each department, working in the day-to-day operations of the theatre as well as on specific projects. Internships are an excellent transition from academia to professional theatre. Internships assignments are flexible with time commitments varying in each department.
Artistic and Administrative positions
Literary Management
The Literary Management Intern will help with the administration of a busy literary office: maintaining scripts and readers, evaluating scripts, database management, playwright correspondence, as well as dramaturgy of the mainstage season.
This position requires extremely organized individuals who are self-motivated, with a strong interest in directing, dramaturgy, or artistic/literary management of new works. Along with a letter, resume and references, please include a writing sample.
Artistic/Directing
The Artistic/Directing intern will assist the Artistic Director and Associate Producer with casting, script preparation, production research, and new play research/development and general artistic administration. Organization is a must for this position. Interns will also assist with the dramaturgical needs of individual projects as assigned. Along with a letter, resume and references, please include a writing sample.
Arts Administration
The Arts Administration Internship will work closely with the Managing Director, Business Manager, and Company Manager in a fast paced office. Interns will experience the day-to-day running of a regional theatre, be assigned specific projects, and become a vital part of how business is conducted in the office. Interns will be at the center of all information flowing in and out George Street Playhouse. The internship will cover nonprofit accounting, IT management, human resource management, and problem solving- all in a creative environment. Qualifications: college student with data entry knowledge and good communications skills.
Development
George Street Playhouse is looking for dedicated Development Interns to work with a world-class fundraising team. The Development Internship will include experience with the planning and execution of special events, administrative assistance, writing opportunities, corporation and foundation fundraising, grants and proposals, government and individual giving, development of an individual appeal campaign, prospect research and donor cultivation. Experience on Excel and Word a plus.
Educational
The Education Department at GSP has a reputation and commitment of sustaining an excellent program. With the touring company, various workshops/residencies and classes offered throughout the year, GSP artists reach out to tri-state area schools and extend professional theatrical and academic enrichment, as well as entertainment. Interns are kept busy in the Education Department by assisting with theatre classes, in-school residencies and performances. Interns are involved with research, administrative work, and maintaining correspondence with schools and individuals involved with arts-in-education. Being an education intern is a great way to be involved in teaching, program development, as well as educational and issue-oriented theatre.
Marketing and Public Relations
Do you love theatre? The Marketing and Public Relations department at George Street Playhouse, one of NJ's leading professional theatres is seeking interns with an interest in exploring a career arts management or communications. Applicants must enjoy working with creative people, be hard working & enthusiastic. A sense of humor and a willingness to take on a variety of projects from stuffing envelopes and data entry to research and writing is a must! The successful Marketing and PR intern will acquire valuable professional references and on-the-job experience that, for past interns, has lead to employment at major arts organizations across the country.
Production positions
Costumes/Wardrobe
Interns in the Costume Shop assist in the planning, design, execution, and maintenance of costumes for plays in the season, during rehearsals as well as performances. Interns also assist in special projects as needed and run shows, seeing that all dressing needs are met during performances. A costume internship is a great way to experience first-hand the design process in a professional theatre.
Electrics and Sound
Electrics/Sound Interns serve on the electric/sound running crew of main-stage productions and assist in variety of areas, including preparation for productions, changeovers from production to production, setting up special effects devices, electrics/sound maintenance and organization, special events, photo calls, audio/video taping, and general electrical building maintenance. Getting to work along side with the GSP staff and guest designers is a great way to explore one's own style and skill.
Properties
Interns in the Properties Department run and maintain props for all shows and technical rehearsals. Interns assist in maintenance and improvements of property storage area as well as the building, borrowing, and buying of properties. With the great variety of shows produced at GSP, prop building is ever changing. Learn how to accommodate director and designer's needs by using your creative skills.
Scene Shop
Interns in the Scene Shop assist with the preparation and construction of sets, including carpentry, basic metal and plastics work, and fabrication of drops. Interns will also assist the Technical Director with any scenic problems that arise during technical rehearsals and maintenance of the scene shop, stage facilities and scenery during the run. Interns should have experience in technical theatre and knowledge of shop etiquette and safety issues.
Stage Management
Learn about Actor's Equity rules and the expectations of a professional Stage Manager. Stage Management interns assist in all areas including prompt scripts, rehearsal duties, play research, running of the show, and participation in set-up and strike. GSP provides an excellent learning environment for up and coming stage managers.
General Production
GSP Internships involve all production areas including props, sound, carpentry, and electrics. Production Interns are given the opportunity to broaden their experiences in all production areas. As an intergraded member of the GSP staff, interns will gain first hand knowledge of all theatrical aspects including running a professional LORT theatre, light plots, hang and focus, drafting, and the design process. Applicants should be committed, willing to learn and have an interest in theatre as a career. Basic carpentry, Word Perfect, and painting skills are essential. Operating hours are between 10 AM and 10 PM and Production Interns are needed throughout the entire season.
