George Street Playhouse Apprenticeships
Apprentice positions are designed to give the apprentice a year of broad, theatrical experiences. Apprentices are supervised within their primary department, but also have opportunities for experience in other departments. These positions are ideal educational preparation for a career in professional theatre. The apprenticeships are full-time commitments (at least 40 hours a week), last 6-10 months, and include a weekly stipend.
Education
The Education Apprentice will gain experience in a respected and busy department. Apprentices assist in classes (with possible opportunities to teach), assistant direct touring shows, participate in the casting process for the touring theatre, as well as understudy for the touring shows. The position also provides experience outside the department in the areas of house management, business assistant, and dramaturgy. Apprentices also support the education department by coordinating the internship program, doing administrative work, as well as additional research.
Marketing & Sales
The position offers an opportunity to play a vital role in the marketing of a nationally-recognized regional theatre. The apprentice will be given a forum for creativity and the opportunity to provide creative input on single ticket and group sales strategies. In addition to marketing focus, the apprentice will provide audience customer service at performances and general administrative support to the Playhouse - gaining broad experience in the workings of a professional theatre company.
Literary Management
The Literary Management Apprentice will work directly with the Artistic and Producing Directors in administration of a busy literary office: maintain scripts and readers, evaluate scripts, database management, playwright correspondence, as well as dramaturgy of the mainstage season. Another focus for the Apprentice will be the coordination of The Next Stage Festival, a three-play series of new works for the American Theatre.
Development
The Development Apprentice will work as a team member in office administration, grant writing, and planning and execution of special events. This comprehensive apprenticeship will involve work in corporation and foundation fundraising, grant proposals, government and individual giving, individual appeal campaigns, prospect research, and donor cultivation. Candidates should have experience on Excel and Word. Please submit a writing sample with application.
General Production
Production Apprentices are involved in all production areas including props, sound, carpentry, and electrics. Apprentices are given the opportunity to broaden their experiences in all production areas as an integrated member of the GSP staff. Apprentices will gain firsthand knowledge of all theatrical aspects including running a professional LORT theatre, light plots, hang and focus, drafting, and the design process. Applicants should be committed, willing to learn and have an interest in theatre as a career. Basic carpentry and painting skills are essential. In the personal statement, please address all skills you have that apply to theatre.
