• Experience Art, Jazz, & The Blues in New Brunswick
- March 11, 2009
Friday the 13th is not necessarily a day full of foreboding, particularly if one is an arts lover headed for New Brunswick that evening -- a number of events in visual arts, theatre and jazz will be offered. Beginning at 5:30pm, the New Brunswick Cultural Center will be hosting an opening reception for a multi-artist show Inspirations, of world-renowned and local African-American artsts curated by Astah’s Gallery of Maplewood especially for the Brodsky Space at the Heldrich. At 8pm, one can venture across Livingston Avenue to George Street Playhouse for a performance of The Devil’s Music: The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith starring the incomparable Miche Braden. And, if you are still hungering for more, George Street Playhouse in association with local arts group Collaborative Arts and the Somerset Jazz Coalition, will convert the Playhouse’s Cabaret space into a Jazz club, where one can listen to local artists The Dan Esptein Jazz Band and The Jim Jasion Jazz Band. And if you’re stuck for a recommendation for dinner, George Street Playhouse offers affordable dinner and theatre packages at Christopher’s, located in The Heldrich, and Delta’s on Dennis Street, where they celebrate the spirit of the South with fine Southern Cuisine.
